Voice and video rooms

Join a channel's room for a voice or video call with screen sharing, noise cancellation, a soundboard and attention alerts. Oracle.

Every channel in Team Chat has a room: click it and you are in a call with whoever else is there, like a voice channel on Discord. This page is for Oracle (and LaunchBoom) teams who want to talk out loud while they work.

What this page helps you do

  • Join and leave a room, and keep the call going while you read other channels.
  • Use your microphone, camera and screen share.
  • Set your devices and noise cancellation.
  • Use the soundboard and get a teammate's attention.

You'll start from the Voice & video section of the Team Chat channel list.

Before you start

  • Rooms come with Team Chat: Oracle plan or the LaunchBoom program.
  • You see a room for each channel you belong to.
  • Your browser will ask for permission to use the microphone the first time; allow it, or the join fails ("Could not join the video room. Check that your browser allows the microphone and try again.").

Join a room

In the channel list, under Voice & video, click a room. You join with your microphone on and your camera off, and the room takes the place of the conversation.

Helpful details

  • Key areas: each room shows who is in it; the room view shows a tile per person with icons for Muted, Camera on, Sharing their screen and Deafened. A short sound plays when someone joins or leaves your room.
  • What you can do: click Back to chat to read and write in channels while the call continues. A dock at the bottom of the channel list shows the room you are in, with mute, camera and leave controls.
  • Good to know: you can be in one room at a time. Joining from another tab or device moves you there and the first one leaves ("You joined the room from another tab or device, so this one left it.").

Microphone, camera and screen

The controls at the bottom of the room are Mute / Unmute, Turn the camera on / Turn the camera off, Share your screen / Stop sharing your screen, Deafen / Undeafen and Leave the room.

Helpful details

  • Key areas: Deafen silences everything you hear, and others see you as deafened.
  • What you can do: share a window, a tab or your whole screen. On a Mac, sharing the whole screen needs Screen Recording permission for the browser (System Settings, Privacy & Security); a single window or tab works without it.
  • Good to know: cameras and screen shares are sent at up to 720p.

Devices and noise cancellation

Open Microphone, camera and speaker from the room controls to pick which Microphone, Camera and Speaker to use.

Helpful details

  • Key areas: the Noise cancellation switch ("Filters keyboard, background and room noise from your microphone.").
  • What you can do: turn noise cancellation on once; the choice is saved to your account and holds on every browser and device.
  • Good to know: noise cancellation is off until you switch it on.

People in the room

Open the menu on a person's tile for Mute for me (they stay audible to everyone else) and Get their attention.

Helpful details

  • Key areas: Get their attention rings the teammate, even through their deafen, and sends a system notification ("{name} wants your attention") if their tab is in the background. The browser asks you once, when you join a room, whether Boardssey may show notifications.
  • What you can do: alert the same person once every 10 seconds ("Wait a moment before alerting {name} again").
  • Good to know: Admins (the Primary Owner and anyone who can manage members) also get moderation items on tiles, such as muting or removing someone, and on a desktop they can drag a person's row onto another room to move them ("{name} moved you to the {room} room").

Soundboard

Open Soundboard from the room controls and press a clip to play it for everyone in the room.

Helpful details

  • Key areas: the soundboard panel with a Soundboard volume slider for how loud clips play for you.
  • What you can do: Admins click Add a sound, choose an Audio file (MP3, OGG, WAV, WebM, M4A or FLAC, up to 5.5 seconds and 512 KB), an Emoji and a Name. Only Admins add and remove sounds; anyone in a room plays them.
  • Good to know: a team keeps up to 24 sounds. Each person can play one clip every 5 seconds ("Next sound in {seconds}s"), and clips are silent for anyone who is deafened.

Leaving and timeouts

Click Leave the room in the controls or the dock. If nobody in the room speaks, shows a camera or shares a screen for 30 minutes and you do not touch the controls, Boardssey removes you ("You were removed from the room after 30 minutes without activity. Join again whenever you like.").

Helpful details

  • Key areas: the dock's leave button works from any channel.
  • What you can do: join again at any time.
  • Good to know: closing the tab also leaves the room.

Tips & common questions

My microphone or camera does not work. Check that the browser is allowed to use it and that no other app holds it; the error messages say the same. Then pick the right device under Microphone, camera and speaker.

Can Collaborators join rooms? Yes, for the channels they belong to, which for game channels means the games they were granted.

Can I be in a room and read another channel? Yes. Click Back to chat; the dock keeps the call.

Why can I not add a sound? Only team Admins add and remove soundboard clips. Ask one.

Is there a limit on people per room? Boardssey sets none. Video and screen shares are capped at 720p to keep calls smooth.
