Connecting BoardGameGeek

Link a game to its BGG page, import details from BGG, read BGG forums inside Boardssey, and follow the BGG hotness on your dashboard.

Last reviewed October 11, 2026

Boardssey connects to BoardGameGeek (BGG) in four small ways: a game can carry its BGG link, pull its details from BGG, show the game's BGG forums, and your dashboard can show what is hot on BGG right now. None of them needs a BGG account.

What this page helps you do

  • Add a BGG link to a game.
  • Fill a game's details from BGG.
  • Unlock the BGG Forums tab.
  • Add the Trending on BGG card to your dashboard.

You'll start from a game's Edit game page, or from your dashboard.

Add a BGG link to a game

Open the game, click Edit game, scroll to BGG Link, paste the game's BGG address (for example https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/174430/gloomhaven), and click Save game.

Helpful details

  • Key areas: the link shows on the Game Info tab and unlocks the BGG Forums tab on the game page.
  • What you can do: your public catalog gets a BGG Entry button on the game's page, so publishers can hop to the community page.
  • Good to know: paste the full address including https://. If BGG renames the page, the old link keeps redirecting.

Import details from BGG

Instead of typing a published game's players, play time, complexity and credits, let BGG fill them. In the create dialog, use Import from BGG (Optional); on the Edit page, click Import from BGG.

Helpful details

  • Key areas: the import also fills the BGG Link field.
  • What you can do: add a whole back catalog in minutes with Save & Add Another.
  • Good to know: the import overwrites the fields it fills. Full walkthrough in Import a game from BoardGameGeek.

Read the game's BGG forums

Once a game has a BGG link, its page shows a BGG Forums tab listing recent threads, replies, session reports and reviews, with filters and a title search.

See BGG forums.

Add Trending on BGG to your dashboard

BGG's hotness list ranks the games getting the most attention right now. The Trending on BGG card shows the top 10 and is hidden until you add it:

  1. Open your dashboard (Dashboard in the sidebar).
  2. Under the cards, click Customise layout.
  3. Next to Hidden:, click + Trending on BGG.
  4. Click Done.

Helpful details

  • Key areas: each game shows its cover, year, player count and play time. Hover for designers, a short description, mechanisms and weight (BGG's 1 to 5 complexity rating). Click to open it on BGG.
  • What you can do: move the card, change its width or hide it again from Customise layout. See Dashboard tour.
  • Good to know: the layout is personal, so each teammate adds the card to their own dashboard. The list refreshes from BGG about twice a day.

What Boardssey does not do with BGG

Boardssey reads public BGG data only, through BGG's API. It never signs in to your BGG account, never posts, and never reads your BGG activity. To reply in a thread or edit a BGG entry, sign in on boardgamegeek.com.

Tips & common questions

The BGG Forums tab is missing. The game has no BGG link yet. Add one on the Edit page and save.

My game is not on BGG yet. Should I create a placeholder? No. Leave BGG Link empty until the game has a real BGG page. Most prototypes get one close to publication.

The forums tab is empty. Either the game has no recent BGG posts, or the link points at the wrong page. Check the address on the Edit page.

Can I show the hotness for one category or region? No. The card shows BGG's main board game hotness list, top 10.
