3D Mockups (beta)

Compose your cards, boxes, boards and tokens in 3D from your own artwork, save scenes to a game, and start from a template.

This article is for designers who need a product shot before the product exists: a box on a shelf, a fan of cards, a board mid-game. 3D Mockups builds that scene in your browser from your own artwork.

What this page helps you do

  • Find 3D Mockups and check your plan.
  • Create a scene, or start from a template.
  • Move around the scene and select objects.
  • Save scenes, link them to a game and find them again.

You'll start from 3D Mockups in the sidebar (/home/3d-mockups), marked Beta.

Before you start

  • Beta, rolling out to teams. 3D Mockups is switched on team by team. If it is missing from your sidebar, your team is not in the rollout yet, and the older Digital Mockups tool stays in Tools instead.
  • Plan: Pathfinder plan and up. Adventurer teams see "3D Mockups are a Pathfinder plan feature" with Upgrade to Pathfinder. (Prototypes follow the same rule; Virtual Table AI is Oracle and LaunchBoom only, 50 builds per team per day.)
  • Roles: Collaborators cannot use the Component Designer or 3D Mockups. They see "3D Mockups access restricted".
  • Prepare your artwork as images: a card front, a box wrap, a board. The Component Designer exports these at the right size.

Browse your mockups

The list page shows every scene your team saved, with a preview, the number of objects and "Edited 2 hours ago".

Helpful details

  • Key areas: New mockup, a Search by scene or game box, and a filter for All games or No game.
  • What you can do: Open a scene, or delete one from its card. Deleting asks first and removes it for the whole team.
  • Good to know: A scene saved before the preview was taken says "Save again for a preview".

Create a scene

Click New mockup. The editor opens on an empty table: "Add an element to start your scene". Click Add and pick Cards, Box, Play mat, Board, Tokens, Pieces, 3D model, Extrude or Booklet.

Helpful details

  • Key areas: Or click Start from a template. The presets are Card fan, Card grid, Deck and box, Box standing, Table setup, Board and box, Box with contents, Flat lay and Hero shot, plus Scene templates designed by Boardssey under All templates.
  • What you can do: Pick a template, then swap in your own artwork object by object (see Objects, artwork and finishes).
  • Good to know: Save as 3D Mockup Template is for Boardssey staff only. Teams save scenes, not templates.

Move around the scene

The hint under the view says it: "Click an object to edit it, drag it to move it. Drag the table to orbit, scroll to zoom, right-drag to pan. The cube in the corner snaps to a face."

Helpful details

  • Key areas: The view cube offers Front, Back, Left, Right, Top, Bottom and Home view, with arrows to Turn left, Turn right, Look from above and Look from below. Reset view puts the camera back.
  • What you can do: On a touch screen, tap to select, drag to orbit, pinch to zoom and use two fingers to pan.
  • Good to know: Orbiting changes what you see, not what you export, until you press Use current view under Camera (see Objects, artwork and finishes).

Save and name the scene

Type a Scene name and, if you like, pick a Game ("Link to a game (optional)"). Click Save.

Helpful details

  • Key areas: The status reads Not saved yet, Unsaved changes or All changes saved. A save with a game linked confirms "Scene saved to {game}".
  • What you can do: Open Scenes to see Saved scenes with Open, Duplicate and Delete, start a New scene, or Duplicate current to try a variation.
  • Good to know: A name is required before saving ("Give the scene a name first"). Scenes belong to the team; everyone with access sees them in the list.

Tips & common questions

Where did the Mockups tool in Tools go? Teams with 3D Mockups see it in the sidebar instead of the Tools list. Teams outside the rollout keep Digital Mockups in Tools.

Can I use my Component Designer cards here? Yes. Send the component to the Virtual Table once, then pick it under Cards from on a Cards object. See Send a component to the Virtual Table.

Does a scene need a game? No. The link is optional, but it lets Save to game put renders in that game's Media tab and lets you filter the list by game.

Why is my Adventurer team shown an upgrade screen but no Digital Mockups? When 3D Mockups is on for a team, Digital Mockups leaves the Tools list. On Adventurer, 3D Mockups then shows its plan gate. Upgrading to Pathfinder opens it.
