Plan key dates with Milestones

Put each game's key dates on one timeline, drag them around, make them repeat, and mark them done.

A milestone is a date that matters for a game: a Kickstarter launch, a production run, a convention, a release. The Milestones tab lines them up for every game on one timeline, so you can see how your year fits together.

What this page helps you do

  • Add a milestone to a game, or to the team as a whole.
  • Give a milestone a period, a type, notes and a repeat.
  • Move and resize milestones by dragging.
  • Mark milestones done, and switch between the timeline and a list.

You'll start from Projects in the sidebar, then the Milestones tab (/home/projects?tab=milestones).

Before you start

  • You see the milestones of the games you can read.
  • Admins and members manage every milestone. Collaborators manage milestones only on games they can edit, and cannot add team-wide milestones.

Read the timeline

The header says "See every game's key dates on one timeline". Under it, one row per game that has milestones, plus a Team row for milestones with no game.

Helpful details

  • Key areas: each row with the game's cover and title (the title links to the game), a vertical line for today, and the legend of types under the chart.
  • What you can do: a milestone with one date is a diamond; one with an end date is a bar. Click a type in the legend to hide or show it. Drag the empty track to pan.
  • Good to know: finished milestones stay on the chart, crossed out. If you hide every type, the chart says "Every milestone type is hidden." with a Show all types button. A team with no milestones sees "No milestones yet" and Add your first milestone.

Zoom and switch views

The controls sit above the chart.

Helpful details

  • Key areas: New milestone, Today, the Time scale picker (Weeks, Months, Quarters, Years) and the View switch (Timeline or List).
  • What you can do: Today scrolls the chart back to the current day. List shows the same milestones as a table with Milestone, Game, Date and Status columns.
  • Good to know: the zoom and the view you pick are remembered in this browser.

Add a milestone

  1. Click New milestone, or click a free day in a game's row to start with that game and day filled in.
  2. Type a Title (up to 120 characters), for example Kickstarter launch.
  3. Pick the Game, or choose Team-wide (no game).
  4. Pick a Type: Design & playtesting, Art & graphic design, Marketing, Crowdfunding, Production, Shipping & fulfillment, Release, Convention or event or Other.
  5. Set the Date. For something that lasts, like a campaign, add an End date.
  6. Add Notes if you like (up to 2000 characters), and tick Done if it already happened.
  7. Click Add milestone.

Helpful details

  • Key areas: the New milestone form. Each type has its own icon and colour, and the icon appears next to the title on the chart.
  • What you can do: remove an end date with the small Remove the end date button next to it.
  • Good to know: dates must fall between 1990 and 2100. Milestone dates are calendar dates: the same day for everyone on the team, wherever they are. Task due dates work differently (see Tasks and subtasks).

Make a milestone repeat

In the form, set Repeat to Every week, Every 2 weeks, Every month, Every 3 months or Every year, then pick a Repeat until date.

Helpful details

  • Key areas: the Repeat and Repeat until fields, and the line "Creates N milestones" that counts the series.
  • What you can do: a series can hold up to 104 milestones. The button reads Add N milestones when you create one.
  • Good to know: each date in the series is its own milestone. Editing one says "This milestone repeats. Your changes apply to this date only." Deleting one asks Only this date, This and the following dates or Every date in the series.

Move, resize and edit

Work directly on the chart, or open a milestone's card.

Helpful details

  • Key areas: the milestone marks on the chart, and the card that opens when you click one.
  • What you can do: drag a milestone to another day. Drag either end of a bar to change its start or end. Moves are in whole days. On the card, click Mark as done or Mark as not done, Edit to open the form, or Delete.
  • Good to know: the card reads the timing in plain words: "In 5 days", "Under way, 3 days left", "Yesterday", "Done". Only people who can manage the milestone see the buttons; everyone else sees the details only.

Tips & common questions

Do milestones show on the Calendar tab? No. They live here and, read-only, on the All Tasks Timeline when you turn on Show milestones. See See tasks on a timeline.

Can a collaborator add a milestone? Only on a game they have edit access to. Team-wide milestones need the member or admin role. See Share access on a game.

I cannot pick a date far in the future. Dates are limited to 1990 through 2100 so one typo cannot stretch the chart for the whole team.

Does a milestone shift with time zones? No. A milestone date is the same calendar day for everyone. Only the "today" line follows your own time zone.

Why is my game not in the list? Rows only appear for games that have at least one milestone. Add one with New milestone and the row appears.
