Make a task repeat

Set a task to repeat daily, weekly, monthly or yearly, and understand what happens each time you complete it.

Some work comes back on a schedule: a weekly playtest night, a monthly newsletter, the yearly convention application. Set the task to repeat once and Boardssey creates the next one each time you finish it.

What this page helps you do

  • Turn a task into a repeating task.
  • Choose how often it repeats and on which days.
  • Know what happens when you complete it.

You'll start from a task on a project board (Projects in the sidebar, open a project, click a task card).

Set a task to repeat

  1. Open the task sheet (or the Create a new task sheet for a new task).
  2. Under Repeat, pick Daily, Weekly, Monthly or Yearly. Never is the default.
  3. Set the interval next to Every: a number from 1 to 365, in days, weeks, months or years.
  4. For Weekly, tick the weekdays. For Monthly, pick On day X or On the first/second/third/fourth/last <weekday>.
  5. Check the preview line "Next occurrence: <date>", then click Save (or Create task).

Helpful details

  • Key areas: the Repeat field with its frequency picker, the Every interval, the weekday buttons or the monthly choice, and the preview.
  • What you can do: "Every 2 weeks on Tue" or "Every month on the last Friday" are both possible. Click Clear to stop a task from repeating.
  • Good to know: the weekdays and the day of the month are read from the task's due date. Give the task a due date first so the preview matches what you expect. Without one, the next occurrence is counted from today.

What happens when you complete it

Complete a repeating task like any other: tick its checkbox, pick Mark Complete from the right-click menu, or drag it to Done. The toast says "Task completed. The next occurrence was added to the board."

Helpful details

  • Key areas: the completed task, which stays in Done, and the new task, which appears in the column the old one was in.
  • What you can do: the new task has the next due date, the same tags, assignees, priority, linked projects and repeat settings, plus a fresh, unticked copy of the subtasks. Subtask due dates shift by the same number of days as the task's.
  • Good to know: the completed task keeps its comments and ticked subtasks as a record. Reopening a completed task and completing it again creates another occurrence, so avoid toggling it back and forth.

Spot repeating tasks

A repeating task shows a small repeat icon after its due date on the board card and in the List view.

Helpful details

  • Key areas: the repeat icon on cards and rows, and the Repeat field in the sheet, which reads back the schedule.
  • What you can do: open the sheet to see the exact rule and the next occurrence.
  • Good to know: the next occurrence's date is worked out in the time zone of the person who completed the task, so "every Monday" stays a Monday for them.

Tips & common questions

Can I see all future occurrences at once? No. Only the current task exists; the next one is created when you complete it. The Calendar and the Timeline show the current occurrence only.

I completed a repeating task by mistake. Delete the new occurrence it created, then drag the original out of Done to reopen it. Completing it again later will create a fresh occurrence.

Can a subtask repeat on its own? No. Repeating is set on the task. Its subtasks are copied, unticked, onto each new occurrence.

How do I stop a task from repeating? Open the task sheet, click Clear under Repeat, and Save. Completing it then simply moves it to Done.
