Exporting from the whiteboard

Get a page, a frame or a selection out of the whiteboard as SVG or PNG, copy it to the clipboard, or print it.

When a sketch needs to leave the whiteboard, for a publisher, an artist, a pitch deck or a printout, you export it as a file. This page covers the export options and how to pick between them.

What this page helps you do

  • Export a whole page as SVG or PNG.
  • Export or copy just a frame or a selection.
  • Print a page.
  • Choose the right format for where the picture is going.

You'll start from the main menu in the top-left corner of the Whiteboard, or from a right-click on the shapes you want.

Before you start

  • There is no public share link and no PDF export. Anyone who should see the live board needs a seat on your team (every plan includes unlimited users). See Inviting and managing team members.
  • Exports are snapshots. If the board changes afterwards, export again.

Export the current page

  1. Click the main menu button (the Menu icon) in the top-left corner of the canvas.
  2. Open Export.
  3. Pick Export as SVG or Export as PNG. The file downloads with everything on the current page.

Helpful details

  • Key areas: the same submenu has Toggle transparent background for a see-through background instead of white, and Export as JSON, which is tldraw's own format for moving shapes between boards.
  • What you can do: use SVG for anything that will be scaled or printed: it stays sharp at any size and opens in Illustrator, Affinity and Inkscape. Use PNG for chat, email, slides and social posts.
  • Good to know: a page with many photos makes a big SVG, because the images are embedded in it. Choose PNG when file size matters more than sharpness.

Export a frame or a selection

  1. Select the frame or shapes you want (click a frame's title to select the whole frame).
  2. Right-click the selection.
  3. Open Export as and pick Export as SVG or Export as PNG. Only the selection is exported.

Helpful details

  • Key areas: frames are the handy unit here. If you organized a page into frames ("Reference art", "Economy diagram"), you can send one block without the rough notes around it. See Drawing, writing, and shapes.
  • What you can do: export the same selection as JSON from the same submenu to paste it onto another board later.
  • Good to know: text and strokes keep their on-screen look; hidden parts of a frame's contents stay hidden in the export.

Copy to the clipboard

Right-click a selection and open Copy as, then pick Copy as SVG or Copy as PNG.

Helpful details

  • Key areas: nothing downloads; the picture goes to your clipboard, ready to paste into a document, a chat or a slide.
  • What you can do: copy a quick diagram straight into Team Chat or an email without saving a file first.
  • Good to know: Copy as JSON copies the shapes themselves. Paste that onto another page, or into another team's board, to move drawings around.

Print

Open the main menu (the Menu icon in the top-left corner) and click Print. Your browser's print dialog opens with the current page laid out for paper.

Helpful details

  • Key areas: the browser dialog chooses paper size, orientation and scale.
  • What you can do: choose "Save as PDF" in the browser's print dialog if you want a PDF for your own records. That is the browser's feature, not an export from Boardssey, so the result is a flat picture of the page.
  • Good to know: for a clean handout, export a frame as PNG and place it in your own document instead.

Tips & common questions

Can someone outside my team view the board live? No. Invite them to the team (Collaborator is the role for outside helpers, and they only see pages for games shared with them), or send an export.

The PNG looks blurry on a big screen or in print. Export as SVG instead, or zoom in on the selection before exporting a PNG so it is captured at a larger size.

The export is huge. Photos are embedded in SVG exports. Export as PNG, or export a frame rather than the whole page.

Does the exported file update when the board changes? No. It is a snapshot from the moment you exported. Export again for a fresh version.

Can I export every page at once? No. Exports work per page. Switch pages and export each one.
