Game Whiteboard

A full collaborative canvas inside Boardssey for sketching, brainstorming, and visual design, what it does and when to use it.

Boardssey's Whiteboard is a full collaborative visual canvas, sketch card layouts, map a game's economy, run a remote design session, pin reference images to a moodboard. It's a separate tool from the 15 small Game Dev tools because it's a full app in itself, not a 30-second utility.

This page is the entry point. The other articles in this collection cover specific tasks (drawing, images, sharing, etc.).

What this page helps you do

  • Understand what the Whiteboard is and what it isn't.

  • Decide whether to use it standalone or scoped to a specific game.

  • Find the rest of the documentation for what you want to do.

Before you start

  • The Whiteboard is on the Pathfinder and Oracle plans. See Plans and pricing.

  • It works in any modern browser. No app to install.

What you can do on the Whiteboard

  • Draw with pen, highlighter, and shape tools.

  • Write with a text tool that supports formatting, sticky notes, and callouts.

  • Add images and files by dragging them in.

  • Organize with multiple pages and frames per board.

  • Collaborate live: see other people's cursors and changes in real time as they work alongside you.

  • Share and export: get a public-view link, or export pages to PDF or PNG.

The toolset is suited to design thinking, economy diagrams, card layout mockups, ideation walls, post-playtest debriefs, branching decision trees. It's not aimed at production-quality illustration work; for that, keep using your existing illustration tools and import the results.

Two ways to open a whiteboard

Standalone whiteboard, open the Whiteboard from the sidebar. These boards aren't tied to a specific game; use them for cross-game ideation, studio-level planning, or whatever doesn't have a single home.

Per-game whiteboard, every game has its own whiteboard accessible from the game page. Use it for sketches and notes that are specifically about that game. The board appears inside the game's record so it travels with it.

For when to use which, see Per-game whiteboard vs standalone.

Tips & common questions

Why do I see "Whiteboard not available on this plan"? You're on the Adventurer plan. Upgrade to Pathfinder or Oracle from Account β†’ Billing to enable the Whiteboard.

Can I use the Whiteboard on a tablet? The Whiteboard works in browsers on tablets. A stylus (Apple Pencil etc.) makes drawing meaningfully better than a finger. Touch panning and pinch- zoom work as you'd expect.

Is the Whiteboard the same as Polotno / the Card Designer? No. The Whiteboard (powered by tldraw) is a free-form ideation canvas. The Card Designer (powered by Polotno) is a structured layout tool for cards and printed components. Different jobs, different tools.

Can a publisher view a whiteboard I share? Yes, exports to PDF or PNG are standard, and read-only share links work without an account. See Sharing and exporting.

Where do whiteboards live? Inside your team workspace. Standalone whiteboards live at the team level; per-game whiteboards live with their game. Deleting either one is permanent, see the relevant article.
