Copy or archive a game

Duplicate a game to start a variant, or archive one you're no longer working on but don't want to delete.

Two non-destructive operations on a game: copy (duplicate the game's data into a new game) and archive (hide it from the library without deleting). Both are in the game's actions menu.

What this page helps you do

  • Copy a game to start a variant or template.

  • Archive a game to clear it from the library.

  • Restore an archived game when you want it back.

Copy a game

Use copy when you want to start a new game from an existing one, a variant rule set, a different theme on the same mechanic, a "v2" of a game where you want to preserve v1 untouched.

To copy:

  1. Open the game's page.

  2. Click the Actions menu (top right) and pick Copy game.

  3. Boardssey creates a new game prefixed Copy of [name] (or with a "(2)" suffix). Optionally rename right away.

What gets copied:

  • All Game info fields (descriptions, hooks, credits, mechanics, etc.).

  • Components.

  • Rules text.

  • Notes.

  • External resources links.

  • Versions list (as a snapshot).

What does not get copied:

  • Playtests (they're tied to the original game).

  • Pitches (same).

  • Sell sheets (same).

  • Permissions grants (the new game starts with default access).

  • Media (you'll re-upload or re-link).

Archive a game

Archiving is for games you're no longer actively working on but don't want to delete, published games years past launch, prototypes you set aside, expansions that didn't ship.

To archive:

  1. Open the game's page.

  2. Click Actions β†’ Archive game.

  3. The game is removed from the default library view.

Archived games:

  • Are hidden from the games library by default.

  • Can be revealed via the library's Show archived toggle.

  • Still count toward your plan's game limit (so archive doesn't free up slots; delete does, see Delete a game).

  • Keep all their data; you can still open, view, and edit them.

Restore (unarchive) a game

In the games library, toggle Show archived on. Find the archived game. Open its Actions menu and pick Unarchive. The game returns to the active library.

Tips & common questions

Should I archive or delete? Archive when you might want the data back. Delete when you're sure you don't need it. Archive doesn't free game slots; delete does.

Can I copy a game across teams? Today, copies stay within the team. Cross-team copy is on the roadmap.

What happens if I copy an expansion? The copy keeps the Is expansion flag and the parent game link. Edit either field on the copy if you need a different relationship.

Will copying double the storage? For text-based fields, copies are cheap. For media, copies don't re-upload, you'll either re-upload or skip media on the copy.

Can I copy a Collaborator's permissions onto the new game? No, copies start with default permissions. Re-grant Collaborator access on the new game if needed.
