A template is a saved board layout: a set of columns plus the tasks that start in them. Use one to set up a crowdfunding campaign or a playtest round in a minute instead of typing the same tasks again.

What this page helps you do

  • Browse and preview the templates your team can use.
  • Start a new project from a template.
  • Save one of your projects as a template.
  • Edit or delete a template your team saved.

You'll start from Projects in the sidebar, then the Templates tab (/home/projects?tab=templates).

Browse the templates

Open the Templates tab. It has two groups: Your Templates and Industry Templates.

Helpful details

  • Key areas: Your Templates lists the templates your team saved. Until you save one it says "No templates yet". Industry Templates lists the 16 templates Boardssey ships: Crowdfunding Campaign, Convention / Demo, Pitch to Publisher, Game Design (New Game), Playtest Campaign, Print & Manufacturing, Localization, Retail & Distribution, Expansion / New Edition, Review & Media Campaign, Pre-Launch Audience Building, Art Direction & Illustration, Rulebook Writing & Editing, Graphic Design & Visual Identity, Digital Adaptation and Solo Mode Design.
  • What you can do: each card shows the template's icon, name, description and badges for its size, like "4 cols" and "12 tasks".
  • Good to know: industry templates cannot be edited or deleted. Save one as a starting point by creating a project from it, adjusting the board, then using Save as Template.

Preview and use a template

  1. Click a template card. A preview opens with the columns from To Do to Done and the tasks in each.
  2. Click Use this template.
  3. The New project dialog opens with the template already picked. Fill in the project and click Create project (see Create a project).

Helpful details

  • Key areas: the preview dialog and its Use this template button.
  • What you can do: read every starter task before you commit. Each task shows its priority.
  • Good to know: the same templates appear in the first step of New project (Choose a template), so you do not have to come to this tab first.

Save a project as a template

  1. Open a project board.
  2. Click Save as Template in the board header.
  3. Type a Template Name (it suggests the project's name), an optional Description, and pick an Icon.
  4. Click Save as Template.

Helpful details

  • Key areas: the Save as Template button sits in the board header next to New Task. Only the team owner and admins see it.
  • What you can do: the template saves the board's columns and its open tasks (name, description, priority and column). It does not save completed tasks, assignees, due dates, tags or subtasks.
  • Good to know: the project itself is not changed. The template appears under Your Templates for everyone in the team.

Edit or delete your templates

On a card under Your Templates, hover to see a pencil and a trash icon.

Helpful details

  • Key areas: the pencil opens the template editor (/home/projects/templates/<id>/edit). The trash icon asks "Delete template?" before deleting.
  • What you can do: in the editor, click the template name or description to change them, Add Column, rename or recolour a column, delete a column, add tasks with Add task, rename a task, set its priority, move it to another column or delete it. Changes save as you make them, and Back to templates returns you to the tab.
  • Good to know: editing a template does not touch the projects you already created from it. Deleting a template does not touch them either.

Tips & common questions

Can I start from an industry template and change it? Yes. Create a project from it, adjust the columns and tasks on the board, then Save as Template to keep your version. The original industry template stays as it was.

Who can save or edit templates? The team owner and admins save a project as a template. Anyone who can open the Templates tab can use a template to create a project. Editing and deleting a saved template happens from the Templates tab.

My template has no To Do or Done column in the editor. Every board gets To Do and Done automatically. The template only stores the columns in between, which is why the editor shows those two as fixed.

Does a template include who the tasks are assigned to? No. A template keeps columns and tasks only. Assign people and set due dates once the project exists.
