Expansions
Mark a game as an expansion of a base game, add expansions from the base game's page, and see the family in your catalog.

An expansion in Boardssey is a game of its own, linked to a base game. The base game lists its expansions on an Expansions tab, the expansion shows "Expansion of ..." in its header, and your public catalog links the two.
What this page helps you do
- Create a game as an expansion, or turn an existing game into one.
- Add an expansion from the base game's page.
- Change or remove the link to the base game.
You'll start from the Games page in the sidebar, or from the base game's page.
Before you start
- The base game must exist in the same team before you can pick it.
- Each expansion is a separate game and counts toward your plan's game limit.
Create a game as an expansion
In the sidebar, click Games, then New game. In the dialog, set Expansion? to Yes. An Expansion of picker appears; choose the base game. Fill in the status and name as usual and click Create Game.
Helpful details
- Key areas: Expansion of lists every game in the team. Type to search it.
- What you can do: combine it with Import from BGG (Optional) to pull a published expansion's details from BoardGameGeek.
- Good to know: the picker only shows when Expansion? is Yes and the team has at least one other game.
Add an expansion from the base game
Open the base game and click its Expansions tab, then Add Expansion. The create dialog opens with Expansion? already set to Yes and the base game filled in.
Helpful details
- Key areas: the Expansions tab appears only once the game has at least one expansion. For the very first one, use New game in the library.
- What you can do: the tab shows each expansion as a card with its cover, status and short description. Click one to open it.
- Good to know: a game that is itself an expansion never shows an Expansions tab; Boardssey links one level deep.
Turn an existing game into an expansion
Open the game, click Edit game, and set Expansion? to Yes. Pick the base game under Parent game and click Save game.
Helpful details
- Key areas: the same fields let you move an expansion to a different base game, or set Expansion? back to No to make it standalone.
- What you can do: nothing else about the game changes: its playtests, outreach, media and projects stay as they are.
- Good to know: after saving, the game page header shows "Expansion of" with a link to the base game, and the library card shows the same line.
Expansions in your catalog
When both games are in your catalog, a visitor on the base game's page sees its expansions, and the expansion's page links back to its base game.
Helpful details
- Key areas: each game is added to the catalog on its own. An expansion that is not in the catalog is simply not shown.
- What you can do: list a base game alone while its expansion is still in development.
- Good to know: see Choose and order the games in a catalog.
Tips & common questions
Can an expansion have its own expansions? No. Expansions link to one base game, one level deep. Link every expansion to the base game.
Can a game be an expansion of two base games? No. Pick one parent and mention the other in the description.
The Expansion of list is empty. The team has no other game yet. Create the base game first.
What happens to expansions if I delete the base game? They stay as standalone games and lose the link. Deleting a base game does not delete its expansions.
Does an expansion inherit anything from the base game? No. Each game has its own fields, components, rules and media. The link is only for navigation and the catalog.
