Creating a game takes under a minute and gives you the record that playtests, projects, outreach and sell sheets attach to. Start with a working title, then add details whenever you are ready.

What this page helps you do

  • Create a game from a title and a development status.
  • Create several games in a row.
  • Fill in the details publishers and your team will look for.
  • Know the plan limit and who can create games.

You'll start from the Games page in the sidebar.

Before you start

  • Only Admins and Members can create games. Collaborators do not see the New game button.
  • Adventurer allows 5 games, Pathfinder 20, Oracle unlimited. Archived games count. At the limit, New game is greyed out with "You've reached your plan limit!"

1. Open the dialog

In the sidebar, click Games, then New game in the top right. The Add a New Game to the Hub dialog opens.

Helpful details

  • Key areas: Game development status, Game name, Expansion? and, under an OR divider, Import from BGG (Optional).
  • What you can do: type a status to search the list. Any name works as a working title; you can rename later.
  • Good to know: the status list has 15 stages: Idea, Designing, Playtesting, Developed, Localizing, Art & Layout, Ready to Pitch, Looking for Publisher, Quoting, Crowdfunding, Pre-Production, Manufacturing, In Freight, Licensed and Published.

2. Fill in the basics

Pick a status and type a name. If the game is an expansion, set Expansion? to Yes and pick the base game under Expansion of.

Helpful details

  • Key areas: the Import from BGG (Optional) field takes a BoardGameGeek game ID or URL. Leave the name empty to use BGG's title, or type your own to override it. See Import a game from BoardGameGeek.
  • What you can do: click Save & Add Another to create the game and keep the dialog open for the next one, or Create Game to create it and open its page.
  • Good to know: Expansion of only lists games already in your library, so create the base game first. See Expansions.

3. Decide when to add details

After Create Game you land on the game page, and the Add game details? dialog asks whether to fill in more now. Click Edit now to open the Edit page, or Later to stay on the game page.

Helpful details

  • Key areas: you can open the Edit page any time with Edit game in the game's top bar.
  • What you can do: skip details on day one and come back when you have a cover, a pitch and a price.
  • Good to know: a game created from a BGG import skips this dialog, because its details are already filled in.

4. Add details on the Edit page

The Edit page is titled Edit game. Fill in what you know and click Save game (top right). Nothing is saved until you do.

Helpful details

  • Key areas: fields in order: Game name, Game cover, Short description, Long description, Unique Hooks (Hook #1 to #3), Game status, Designer, Artist, Genre, Currency, MSRP, Mechanisms, Minimum players, Maximum players, Minimum duration (minutes), Maximum duration (minutes), Minimum age, Complexity, Expansion? with Parent game, Already licensed in and BGG Link.
  • What you can do: add several designers or artists by separating names with commas or pressing Enter. Complexity is a 1 to 5 star rating. Already licensed in is a country list that your catalog shows to publishers (or "Available Worldwide" when empty).
  • Good to know: the three hooks are the lines publishers see first: a unique theme, a twist on the mechanisms, and a component or toy factor. Import from BGG in the top bar can fill most fields for a published game.

From the game page you can:

Tips & common questions

I made a typo in the name. Can I rename it? Yes. Click Edit game, change Game name and click Save game.

Where is the cover uploaded? In the Game cover field on the Edit page, not in the Media tab. Media holds the rest of your images.

Can two games have the same name? Yes. Boardssey tells them apart internally, but you may not. Add the year or a nickname to the working title.

Do I have to pick a status? Yes, the dialog needs one. If in doubt, pick Idea. You can change it any time by clicking the status chip.

What happens to my games if I downgrade below my game count? Existing games stay. You cannot create new ones until you are under the limit again. See Plans and pricing.
