External resources

Keep links to Drive folders, reference PDFs, BGG threads and videos on the game's Game Info tab.

External Resources is a list of links that live outside Boardssey but belong to the game: a Drive folder of art, a reference rulebook, a BGG thread, a Loom walkthrough. It sits on the game's Game Info tab, one click away.

What this page helps you do

  • Add a link with a name.
  • Open, copy, edit or delete a link.
  • Know when to use a link and when to use the Files or Media tab instead.

You'll start from a game's page: scroll to the bottom of the Game Info tab.

Find the card

On the Game Info tab, scroll past the game details. Three cards sit side by side: Projects, Playtests and External Resources.

Helpful details

  • Key areas: the card lists each resource by name. Click a name to open the link in a new tab.
  • What you can do: everyone who can open the game sees the list, including Collaborators granted the game.
  • Good to know: the list is private to your team. It never appears on your catalog.

Add a link

Click New Resource on the card. Paste the address into Add new link, type a Resource name, and click Save resource.

Helpful details

  • Key areas: two fields only: the URL and the name. There is no description or category.
  • What you can do: make the name say what the link is for: "Art folder (Drive)", "Comparable game rulebook", "Playtest video 12 Apr".
  • Good to know: Boardssey does not sign in to the linked service. Whoever clicks must already have access to the Drive folder or document.

Open, copy, edit or delete

Each row has a menu with Edit, Copy link and Delete.

Helpful details

  • Key areas: Edit opens Edit Resource where you change the address or name, then Update Resource. Delete asks you to confirm and shows the name and address so you delete the right one.
  • What you can do: Copy link puts the address on your clipboard, handy for pasting into a chat or an outreach note.
  • Good to know: rows cannot be dragged into another order.

Links, Files or Media?

Three places hold outside material; pick by what you need.

Helpful details

  • Key areas: External Resources is a list of links to anything. The Files tab (beta) links one cloud folder and shows its contents inside Boardssey. The Media tab holds files you upload, with public sharing for your catalog.
  • What you can do: use a resource link for a single document or thread, the Files tab for the game's working folder, and Media for finished images and PDFs.
  • Good to know: see Link a cloud folder to a game and Game media and assets.

Tips & common questions

Can I attach a file instead of a link? Upload it on the Media tab. External Resources is for addresses only.

Does Boardssey check whether links still work? No. You find out when you click. Prune dead links now and then.

Are the links copied with the game? Yes. Copy to other account always copies external resources.

How is this different from Notes? Notes is free text for thoughts. External Resources is a tidy list you can scan. Paste a link in Notes only when it needs explaining.
